Comment After all, their genre was reality, not fiction. (Score 5, Interesting) 79

Is it "tasteless" to depict reality? People complain often about the "filter bubbles" that so many live in, but when reality is not to their taste, they suddenly want everyone to live in one. LiveLeak provided a much more truthful picture of reality than the millions of wanna-be-Internet-stars do on their Instagram, TikTok or Youtube channels.

Submission + - New side-channel attack on op-caches evades all previous fixes (virginia.edu) 3

ffkom writes: Modern x86 and ARM CPUs translate opcodes into ops, which are usually stored in a cache of their own for later re-use. Researchers from the university of Virginia have found a way to exploit this for side-channel attacks, where malicious code exfiltrates information from other processes or virtual machines based on measurable characteristics of the op-cache state, which they describe in their scientific paper..

This side-channel attack evades all previous fixes for SPECTRE-like attacks, and poses yet another difficult-to-address risk to all software that runs on CPUs that are used by possibly malicious code at the same time — like code running on other people's computers ("the cloud") or code running on CPUs that at the same time run "sandboxes" with code from some untrusted sources on the Internet.

But that still does not mean a sun-lit roof stays "below ambient temperature" during the day. Radiation cooling can work at night, this has been subject to research before - https://www.sciencedirect.com/... - but during the day it is still much more efficient to insulate your building from the hot surface of the root if you want to keep the building cool.

You have failed to do the math: The inventors claim their paint could keep 10kW of heat energy away from a 92 m^2 roof in bright noon daylight. But at the same time, that daylight would will deliver ~ 82 kW heat energy to the same roof. Their ultra-white roof will be colder only compared to the temperature of a conventional roof irradiated the same, not colder than some ambient-average-temperature block of concrete sitting in the shadow.
So no, insulating a hot roof from a cooler building is still the much better idea.
