I think some people feel like they should come, work like slaves for a few years to earn money to take home, and then leave so that a freshly trained American citizen can take over the job.

The problem is that they often don't earn that much to take home, living costs in the US being what they are. Also it's not a very attractive proposition compared to what other countries are offering. I know some people do that kind of thing e.g. with Saudi Arabia, living in a compound for a few years and then leaving, but they come out as millionaires.

Electric motors are pretty reliable already, and generally outlast the car.

EVs in general are changing the used market because even when the bodywork is worn out or damaged there are still many valuable parts that can be re-used with minimal refurbishment, if any. The motors are one example, the battery packs usually have a lot of life left in them too.

Most pirate releases these days are from Korean digital versions. For some reason movies get released there digitally while they are still in Western cinemas. They have Korean subtitles hard-coded but the quality is at least as good as DVD, often better.

Other times digital copies leak from places like Bluray mastering houses. It's getting less common though so usually have to wait for the official release now.

Submission + - Some vaccines only 10% effective against COVID variants (healthdata.org)

AmiMoJo writes: Data from a COVID-19 vaccine efficacy summary by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) reveals that the AstraZenica jab is only 10% effective against the B.1.351 & P.1 variants. B.1.351 emerged in South Africa, and P.1 in Brazil. mRNA vaccines are the most effective (Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Sputnik-V), with other vaccines trailing behind. The British government is considering Pfizer booster shots for those who received the AstraZenica vaccine.

It seems like a mostly ordinary laptop, TBH.

For example the CPU is soldered in, no way to replace that. Unsurprising, Intel doesn't make socketed mobile CPUs. It's nice that you get sockets for RAM and SSD, but that's hardly unique.

In terms of reparability it doesn't look any better than the ultrabook Thinkpads, maybe less so in fact. For example the screen bezel is held in with plastic clips, so repairing the screen isn't any easier than most other laptops. They keyboard actually looks a lot worse, since it is an island type that requires the top of the case to be removed to get at it, compared to other machines where it screws in from the bottom and can be lifted out for replacement.

The modules that let you change the ports are an interesting concept but I'd rather just have more ports. In the space they allocate for a single port you could easily fit 2 or 3 if it wasn't for the module housing taking up room. I don't really want to have to choose between USB-C, USB-A, HDMI or an SD Card reader, I want them all.

Unicomp will sell you a brand new Model M buckling spring keyboard, made in Lexington USA, for about $100. Whatever switches these guys use are unlikely to be as nice as a Model M.

If you want the reprogramable option and open source then you can buy a replacement controller board for a Model M.

I'm happy to have followers on Twitter, but for security and safety reasons I keep accounts separate. There are people who have tried to dox me, or threatened to. There are those who systematically mod my posts "troll" and I'm sure if they had my Twitter account they would report every post for terrorism or bullying too.

That's the real censorship.

More anti vax bullshit

"YouTube said the video about the Columbus shooting violated their harassment, threats and cyberbullying policy"

Ugh

"Her tweet simply included a quote attributed to Adolf Hitler, "I would have killed all the Jews of the world... but I kept some to show the world why I killed them.""

If you think that's what a conservative is then yeah I guess these sites are biased against them.
